All the Comforts from home - Only Afloat!
If you have never been on board a narrow boat before you may be wondering just what to expect. A narrow boat is a craft of a distinctive design which is built to fit into the locks, which are in the main are only seven foot wide.
Narrow boats were originally designed to carry cargo on the canals and were flat bottomed, long and narrow. The narrow boats of yesteryear where built to carry as much cargo as possible and all of the internal area was used for this purpose. The boatman and his family would have lived in a very small area on board or on a separate small boat a 'butty' which was towed behind.
During the last twenty years the canal system has been revitalised and restored for use of the leisure and holiday industry, so what was once a freight transport system in the 19th century, is now a unique holiday experience. Although the narrow boats of today are built to principally the same design they are very different inside. Our Narrow boats have all the comforts of home, they have hot and cold running water and an efficient central heating system. The beds are comfortable and the linen and towels are provided for all persons travelling. The kitchen, or galley, is fully equipped with a fridge, microwave cooker and all of the crockery, cutlery and utensils you will need. The saloon areas are very comfortable and the lounge areas all have a TV/DVD as well as a radio and CD player. Electricity is produced from the engine by storing it in batteries an inverter then converts the 12v to 240v electricity.
The bathrooms are fitted with showers, hand basins, flush toilets and 240v shaver socket. Some of our narrow boat have two full bathrooms which are ideal for two families or friends sharing. All our boats have strong steel hulls and are painted in their own livery colours making them unique to us. The narrow boats all have modern, quiet diesel engines and easy to manage controls, making boat handling a pleasure. Each narrow boat will be equipped with essential boating equipment. The canal boats are powered by a diesel engine and will be ready fuelled for your holiday on arrival. Our boats carry around 100 gallons or 450 litres of water which is delivered to the taps by an automatic electric pump.
Our narrow boats come in different sizes including length and number of berths and you do need think carefully about who will be travelling with you. You need to choose the number of berths based on the number of people who will be travelling and, because of safety and licensing regulations, you cannot 'over man' the narrow boat. People equal berths so, for example, you cannot travel with five persons on a four berth boat.
In twenty years of canal boating we think this was the most comfortable / well appointed boat we have had and also the easiest to drive by far! Staff were super at both arrival and departure. Mrs W.N. Watson - Bedford
What a lovely holiday we've just had! We'd never thought about going on a canal boat before, but some friends of ours had done it and said how much they had enjoyed it. I'm glad we took their advice and tried it. We'll certainly be going again, very soon. Debbie - Devon
